Srinagar, June 18, 2009 : The Shopian Township on Thursday observed complete shutdown for the 19th consecutive day, today, seeking identification of the culprits involved into the rape and murder of two local young women, officials and residents said.
"We have been protesting peacefully to impress upon the authorities to identify the culprits. The administration failure in achieving any break through into the incident means that our womenfolk are not safe," said Ajaz Ahmad Bhat, a Shopian resident.
The town, situated 50 kilometers south of Srinagar, has been protesting since May 30, authorities’ apathy in the rape and murder of the two women aged 17 and 23 years.
Locals said the involvement of Indian troopers in the rape and death of the two women.
Shops, business establishments, government offices and banks and educational institutions in the town are closed and traffic was off the roads.
"Our demand is that culprits should be exposed and put behind bars," said Mohammed Shafi Khan, a coordination committee head of Shopian.
The rape and murder of two women triggered massive protests in the region.
