APHC senior leader and Jammu and Kashmir Salvation Movement Chairman, Zaffar Akbar Bhat has welcomed the Amnesty International report in which AI has urged the Indian authorities to immediately carry out fair and impartial investigations into any involvement of troops in the sexual assault and murder of the two women in Kashmir. Bhat continued to remain under house arrest today and was not allowed to offer Friday prayers.

In a press statement issued in Srinagar today, JKSM Chairman, Zaffar Akbar Bhat while expressing satisfaction on the statement of Amnesty International’s Asia Pacific Director, Sam Zarifi he said that the government of India should accept the recommendations of the Amnesty International. We have been demanding that the rape and murder of two innocent young women in Shopian should be carried out by Amnesty International, he added.

He has also welcomed the statement of US Under Secretary of State, William Burns, which he gave after meeting the Indian Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh in New Delhi saying that the aspirations of Kashmiris had to be taken into account while resolving the Kashmir dispute. This statement of William Burns is highly commendable as peace will continue to get away from South Asia as long as resolution of Kashmir will be kept lingering”, he stressed.

Bhat while condemning the use of indiscriminate force by the police and CRPF personnel against innocent people including students boys and girls who were demonstrating peacefully against the recent rape and murder of two women at Shopian, termed the police action as glaring proof of Indian government’s moral bankruptcy.

He also expressed solidarity with the injured students, praying for their speedy recovery.

JKSM Chairman said that the incidents like Shopian had proven that until Indian troops are not withdrawn from the occupied Kashmir, women, youth, children and properties of Kashmiris are not safe. He also urged repeal of draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act and Public Safety Act from occupied territory immediately.

Bhat while condemning the arrest of senior leaders, he demanded their immediate release.
